Communication Consultants at the University Speaking Center provide peer-to-peer tutoring, orientation speeches, and workshops services. The tutoring services include one-on-one or group assistance in organizing, outlining, presenting, managing public speaking anxiety, group presentations, interpersonal skills etc. for both on- and off-campus clients. Consultants provide constructive feedback in the areas of public speaking, interpersonal communication, and group communication. Clients may be video-taped if they would like or if a professor requires it.
Communication Consultants also provide workshops services which involve the creation and facilitation of interactive workshops and an open, evening workshop series covering topics such as delivery, anxiety, persuasion, conflict management, nonverbal immediacy behaviors, culture shock, active listening, conducting mock trails, and interviewing to name a few.
Undergraduate students interested in becoming a Communication Consultant must have proof of a 3.0 G.P.A. or higher, a faculty recommendation letter which speaks to the interpersonal communication skills as well as desire to help others, and a letter of personal interest that indicates a minimum of a one year commitment to a paid position or a one semester, 90-hour internship (CST 412), as well as contact information for the consultant candidate. The application materials should be sent to:
Kim Cuny @ 3211 MHRA Building
Upon receiving these application materials, an interview will be set up with Kim Cuny, the Speaking Center Director, Sarah Wilde the Assistant Director, or a graduate assistant. Once this paperwork is completed and the student has met with the Directors or Graduate Assistant, a pink add slip can be given to the student allowing them to register for CST 390. Application does not guarantee instructor permission for registration.
Consultant candidates take this CST 390 class which focuses on peer-to-peer tutoring and workshop development as they are acting Junior Consultants. Upon successful completion of this course and approval by the director, the consultant candidates will become paid consultants scheduled based on availability around their classes and other commitments. Consultant candidates also have the option to do a for-credit internship for a semester instead of becoming a paid consultant. CST 390 introduces the particulars of peer-to-peer tutoring, public speaking, interpersonal communication, group communication, and the development and facilitation of training workshops.
Communication consultants can have any major but should have strong interpersonal communication skills, enjoy working with others, posses a genuine desire to help others, wish to further their leadership skills, and take pride in professional development. The CST 390 class is offered in both the spring and fall semesters. If you have general questions about working at the speaking center or CST 390 call 336-256-1346 and ask to speak with the manager.
