Fall 2013 – Community Outreach

Interlink Language Center at UNCG

Consultants facilitated weekly one-on-one conversation practice consultations for many Interlink students. This is an on-going project which supports the development of many nonverbal behaviors associated with interpersonal communication here in the USA. Consultants also held several interactive sessions in classrooms to provide students feedback on facilitating group discussions. Additionally, our workshop programming was extended to Interlink.

Middle College at UNCG

Consultants worked with students in the Middle College program organize and practice their oral presentations. These are students that are currently enrolled in Guilford County Schools that are taking courses, primarily medical and/or health related, that have the opportunity to earn up to two years of college credits.

Student Success Center

As part of our instructional workshops, consultants facilitated workshops for tutors in the Student Success Center at UNCG. The workshop focused on how to create and maintain a positive environment for tutoring and how tutors influence the learning environment through their verbal and non-verbal behaviors. This is an on-going collaboration between the different student support services on campus.

English Conversation Club

Speaking Center Consultants support The English Conversation Club at the Glenwood Branch Library where members of the community are learning English. Consultants facilitate activities to help language learners to put their English speaking skills into action. This is an on-going project to support those of all ages in our community achieve their goals of learning English.

The UNCG Graduate School

Our directors worked with the graduate school to locate faculty members eligible to judge their 3 Minute Thesis Competition. The competition was for students in the process of researching and writing their dissertations. The process of finding qualified judges ended with one of our directors sitting on both judging panels listening to students across disciplines present their dissertations in only three minutes. Our director brought expertise to the panel about effective oral presentation delivery competencies.

Step Up Ministries

This is a new partnership with an outreach program run by a local church in Greensboro. A program titled “Effective Communication” was created and facilitated monthly for those people in program. A new set of participants would show up every month to hear about ways to better talk with their managers and coworkers. This is an ongoing project to help those who are getting back on their feet have the skills to better communicate in their current or future workplaces.

Foundations for Learning (FFL) at UNCG

Consultants facilitated workshops for many sections of FFL about group dynamics. Group presentations are part of the course so consultants went into their classrooms to give information on how to have productive group work, active listening skills, and how to present as a unified group. Activities facilitated during the workshops helped students understand the importance of cohesion and team work. This partnership has been ongoing and will continue in the future.
