My time at the speaking center prepared me for each and every direction my life has taken. When I graduated from UNCG, I moved to Indianapolis to serve as an AmeriCorps VISTA. I became the newest (and possibly youngest) Statewide Coordinator of Homeward Bound – Indiana’s 5K walk to end Homelessness and Provide Affordable Housing. In that capacity I organized and presented to large groups of people in various cities throughout the state. The competencies I developed as a consultant regarding persuasive and informative speaking served me well in that capacity.

That’s not the only time those competencies have come into play. I am now an attorney. Much of my practice involves litigation. It’s never easy to stand in front judges and juries to argue why your client is entitled to what you’re asking for. However, with a little persuasive technique, and a lot of practice, the difficult becomes very doable. I find myself serving as a speaking consultant, of sorts, when assisting other attorneys with their presentation, argumentation, and getting over courtroom jitters.

Finally, my time at the speaking center cultivated my ability to work with people from different backgrounds and with different ideas for the common goal of helping others. My short time as a consultant was 100% worth it.
