Spring 2014 – Community Outreach

Interlink Language Center at UNCG

Consultants facilitated weekly one-on-one conversation practice consultations for many Interlink students. This is an on-going project which supports the development of many nonverbal behaviors associated with interpersonal communication here in the USA. Consultants also held several interactive sessions in classrooms to provide students feedback on facilitating group discussions. Additionally, our workshop programming was extended to Interlink.

Student Success Center

As part of our instructional workshops, consultants facilitated workshops for tutors in the Student Success Center at UNCG. The workshop focused on how to create and maintain a positive environment for tutoring and how tutors influence the learning environment through their verbal and non-verbal behaviors. This is an on-going collaboration between the different student support services on campus.

English Conversation Club

Consultants facilitated consultations at the Glenwood Branch Library with members in the community who are learning English as a second language. Consultants facilitated activities to help people out their English speaking skills into action. This is an on-going project to support those of all ages in our community achieve their goals of learning English.

Office of Leadership and Service-Learning (OLSL)

Consultants facilitated an interactive workshop for their peer educators to help them become more confident in their ability to manage information as well as engage their audience members when facilitating their own workshops around the topic of leadership. Consultants helped to show ways peer educators can move from simply memorizing scripts to creating a balance between content and discussion in their workshops.

Step Up Ministries

This is a new partnership with an outreach program run by a local church in Greensboro. A program titled “Effective Communication” was created and facilitated monthly for those people in program. A new set of participants would show up every month to hear about ways to better talk with their managers and coworkers. This is an ongoing project to help those who are getting back on their feet have the skills to better communicate in their current or future workplaces.

Foundations for Learning (FFL) at UNCG

Consultants facilitated workshops for many sections of FFL about group dynamics. Group presentations are part of the course so consultants went into their classrooms to give information on how to have productive group work, active listening skills, and how to present as a unified group. Activities facilitated during the workshops helped students understand the importance of cohesion and team work. This partnership has been ongoing and will continue in the future.
