Storytelling Curriculum

Statement from Katie Powell, Storyteller:

I developed this project to help middle schoolers understand their identity through empathy and a series of verbal exercises. I really hope it has an impact on students to develop and really think about who they are and their sense of self. In preparation, I found myself looking at many different class examples and templates as well as drawing on my past experiences and what I found the most helpful. It was a really fun project to develop, and I’m so grateful for this opportunity!

The syllabus is a guide on how the study/class would work best, but you can change it to best suit your needs. Much like the syllabus, the teaching plan is how the weeks should play out; this could change based on your class length and size. The lesson summary starting every Monday is also more of a guide. These summaries work as an overview of the lesson and the information you should share. The course materials include storytelling exercises for students in groups of two as well as worksheets that can be completed in class. The exercises can be altered based on your class needs. All in all, the documents provided are based on how this course works best (for 6th to 8th graders in a class of 50 minutes 5 times a week), but these documents are flexible enough for those who want or need to change it to suit their needs and the needs of their class.
