Spring 2011 – Community Outreach

Beyond Academics

Consultants facilitated weekly one-on-one consultations for many BA students. This is an on-going project which supports the development of many communication competencies in an effort to live a more independent life. Additionally our workshop services were extended to BA.

Greensboro’s Neighborhood Congress

As part of our communication activism pedagogy efforts consultants offered a workshop to this organization. The workshop was designed to teach participants how to develop and facilitate 3 minute persuasive speeches to be presented in open public meetings. A topic of particular interest to this group was the re-opening of the White Street Landfill.

McGirt-Horton Branch of Greensboro Public Libraries

Our effort to be in the community doing our communication activism pedagogy work, consultants spent 2 Saturdays each month at the branch. This time is designed to help citizens develop and facilitate 3 minute persuasive speeches to be presented in open public meetings.

Interactive Resource Center

The Interactive Resource Center is a day center which provides assistance to individuals who are homeless in Guilford County. The mission of the IRC is to provide immediate services to address the basic needs of the homeless of Guilford County, as well as resource referrals for all community residents. In conjunction with this mission, the IRC is in the process of building a “speakers bureau” which will provide a platform for IRC participants to tell their own stories about how the IRC has assisted in their quest to find jobs and housing. One of our communicatation consultants has been working closely with the IRC speakers in the creation of this “speakers bureau.”

Interlink Language Center at UNCG

Consultants facilitated weekly one-on-one conversation practice consultations for many Interlink students. This is an on-going project which supports the development of many nonverbal behaviors associated with interpersonal communication here in the USA. Additionally our workshop services were extended to Interlink.
