Fall 2004 – Community Outreach

Triad Storytelling Circle

This group held their regular meeting in our space on a Saturday afternoon.

Tate Street Festival

One of the interns at the Speaking Center coordinated a storytelling venue that was added to an already existing music and arts festival. Two consultants participated by telling stories at this event.

Forensics/Speech and Debate at Guilford County High School

A consultant helped judge a high school Forensics tournament. The initial plan was for a consultant to provide a sounding board for a new English teacher to increase the effectiveness of the school’s speech and debate team.

Wiley Elementary School

Two consultants facilitated a workshop on public speaking delivery skills for a community after-school program of about forty elementary school students. Fifteen, one-hour one-on-one coaching sessions were also conducted, focusing on public speaking delivery skills.

The Christian Life Center of Greensboro

A consultant facilitated five workshops (group communication, conflict management and resolution, and public speaking organization and delivery skills) for 10-15 audience members per session (both students and adults).

Center for New North Carolinians

Two consultants ran an ice cream social on effective communication (initiating conversations) to non-English speaking elementary school aged immigrants.

Andrews High School, High Point

A consultant conducted two, one-on-one sessions (public speaking organization and delivery skills) for two high school seniors who were participating in an upcoming oratorical contest.

Interlink Language Center at UNCG

Consultants facilitate interactive workshops for these students related to culture shock, mock trial, debate, presenting group findings, and basic public speaking delivery skills. Consultants also do one-on-one consultations for these students. This is an on-going project.
