Courtney, Desk Manager

I was given the opportunity to work as desk manager during Summer Session I. My favorite thing that has happened to me during my time here is going to Peacehaven Farm. Peacehaven is a center that hosts four core members who have intellectual and/or developmental disabilities. On Fridays, the staff from the Speaking Center would drive out to the farm to work with them, using a lesson plan crafted by one of the consultants. A favorite lesson of mine was the smiling activity. In this activity, the members were given photos of people they know giving their best “social media smile.” They held a mirror up to themselves and mimicked the smiles that were seen in the photos. I enjoyed seeing how fun the activity was for them. Seeing them actively engaging in the activity shows how important it is to reach out and work within your community.
