Fall 2008 – Community Outreach

Interlink Language Center at UNCG

Consultants facilitated weekly one-on-one conversation practice consultations for many Interlink students. This is an on-going project which supports the development of many nonverbal behaviors associated with interpersonal communication here in the USA.

The Black Child Development Institute of Greensboro

Over the past two years The Black Child Development Institute has utilized the Speaking Center’s service to train their volunteers. This year our consultants trained members of the community who volunteer in The Spirit of Excellence AmeriCorps Program to effectively communicate and manage conflict. Several of the members of the program are college students who dedicate their time to The Black Child Development Institute by working with at risk children who experience conflict in their daily life experiences.

The National Conference for Community and Justice of the Piedmont Triad, Inc. (NCCJ), Greensboro, NC.

Consultants worked with high school students in preparing persuasive speeches for a presentation to their school board. Consultants facilitated the ninety-minute interactive workshop at the NCCJ site, explaining the persuasive tools students can apply to organize and deliver their speeches. The speeches also included their learning experiences gained through the NCCJ sponsored youth programs. The mission of NCCJ is to fight bias, bigotry, and racism in America.

Greensboro Youth Council

The Greensboro Youth Council (GYC) exists to develop leadership and volunteer opportunities for Guilford County high school students through the planning and implementation of unique youth-run programs that benefit and serve the community. The University Speaking Center consultants assisted GYC students in developing their public speaking skills by preparing and facilitating a workshop that focused on managing public speaking anxiety and how to effectively organize and deliver a presentations. The students used the information our consultants shared with them when delivering several presentations and weekly meeting reports.

Thanks for Giving!

This semester, the Sustainability Committee of The University Speaking Center held its first annual “Thanx4Giving” holiday food drive.Ê During the weeks before and after Thanksgiving, non-perishable foods were collected in the Speaking Center lobby.

After exams, the food was donated to the Urban Ministries of Greensboro food bank, where it will reach those in need around our community during this holiday season.Ê A remarkable 47 pounds of food was donated!

A big Thank You to the all of the participating Speaking Center and Writing Center employees, students, teachers, and faculty who helped make a difference in our community.
