This semester, the Sustainability Committee of The University Speaking Center held its annual “Thanx4Giving” holiday food drive. During the weeks before and after Thanksgiving, non-perishable foods were collected in the Speaking Center lobby.
After exams, the food was donated to the Urban Ministries of Greensboro food bank, where it reached those in need around our community during this holiday season.
The Interactive Resource Center is a organization which provides assistance to individuals who are homeless in Guilford County. The mission of the IRC is to provide immediate services to address the basic needs of the people of Guilford County, as well as resource referrals for all community residents. In conjunction with this mission, the IRC is in the process of building a “speakers bureau” which will provide a platform for IRC participants to tell their own stories about how the IRC has assisted in their quest to find jobs and housing. One of our communicatation consultants has been working closely with the IRC to train their staff and volunteers to assist in the creation of this “speakers bureau.” We conducted several of the Speaking Center’s signature storytelling workshops in an effort to assist individuals who are homeless in the telling of their stories.
Speaking Center Consultants developed and facilitated oral communication workshop for the guest clients of Light & Energy Workers Association (LEWA). LEWA is a non-profit spiritual organization in North Carolina committed to providing spiritual services to its clients in the community.
