Shanelle, Managing Consultant
During the spring semester of my sophomore year, I took CST 390 where I received training on how to become a communication consultant. Every year, the National Association of Communication Centers holds a conference, and this particular year it was being held at UNCG. Although I was still training and not a full time consultant yet, I decided I would step out of my comfort zone and present on a panel at the conference. My first conference experience was for sure the most memorable, and overall my favorite Speaking Center memory. The day before the conference I was nervous and excited, because I had never presented on a panel before. I remember I stayed up almost all night long, which is very rare for me since I normally go to bed really early. While at the conference I got to watch my friends and fellow consultants talk about really important topics and issues, but I also got to watch them put on VR goggles and attempt to give a speech. The conference ended up being a big success, and a perfect balance of knowledge and fun. This is my favorite Speaking Center story for many reasons, but mainly because it was the first time I felt like I had found my place at the center, and was loved and supported by my peers.
