Consultants facilitated weekly one-on-one conversation practice consultations for many Interlink students. This is an on-going project which supports the development of many nonverbal behaviors associated with interpersonal communication here in the USA. Consultants also held several interactive sessions in classrooms to provide students feedback on facilitating group discussions. Additionally, our strictly speaking workshop series were extended to Interlink.
As part of a new partnership, the Speaking Center worked with New Garden Friends School to create a public speaking course as an elective for their sophomore and junior students. The course was administered over an eight week period and was conceived as a general overview of public speaking and practice sessions. Some of the topics covered were: speech anxiety, organization/outlining, delivery, persuasion, group communication, and presentation aids.
The Sustainability Committee at the Speaking Center collected new and gently used school supplies for the Guilford County Teachers Supply Warehouse. The Supply Warehouse is a place that teachers can go to collect needed school supplies for their classrooms, free of charge. By contributing to the warehouse, the Speaking Center is seeking to continue its efforts to support the Greensboro area community and help provide the tools students need to succeed.
As part of our communication activism pedagogy efforts, consultants helped citizens who wanted to address the Greensboro City Council during their weekly public meetings. Consultants spent one-on-one time with citizens to offer feedback on their organizational structure and delivery so they would have an effective persuasive argument. Speakers have 3-5 minutes to address the Council on a particular community matter. This is an ongoing community engagement that our staff will continue to be a part of.
