Taking classes in the Communication Department and working at the Speaking Center have helped me to develop skills that are crucial for my second career, teaching interior design. The design skills I acquired through the Interior Architecture Department here at UNCG and many years of working as an interior design practitioner were not enough. I needed to know how to communicate with a large group of students and feel confident that I can keep them engaged and learning. The time I spent at the Speaking Center not only benefited me, but it showed me how important it is for my students to learn the skills that the Speaking Center teaches, too. Design students are good with visual communication, but they need to be able to share their ideas verbally. My lesson plans will always include leaning through the Speaking Center.
