Leading by Example

Since 2002, The University Speaking Center has been the place on campus for faculty, staff, and students to turn for support of their public, interpersonal, or group oral communication needs. While providing superior support here in Greensboro, UNCG’s speaking center has developed a national reputation.  

UNCG’s center serves as a national leader on many fronts.  No other center has:

• produced the amount of communication center scholarship UNCG has
• earned the amount of communication center awards UNCG has earned
• a fact sheet that compares to UNCG’s
• provided the amount of consecutive years of leadership UNCG has provided to the National Communication Association’s Communication Centers Section
• had 6 of their former students move on to careers in center leadership
• recently been invited to join 5 NSF/DoE communicating science grant teams
• had the past leader of gen ed formally request funds (more than once) be allocated to add faculty development for oral communication to their offerings 
• hosted the national speaking center conference three times

Leaders from the 140  speaking centers across the country turn to UNCG’s directors and coordinator for guidance. Other offices at UNCG turn to the speaking center to train their student employees. Faculty from UNCG enjoy consulting with our directors and coordinator as they seek unique ways for the center to meet their students where they are and help them as they become more confident and competent oral communicators. UNCG’s academic publications, including co-authored articles with UNCG faculty and students, are referenced positively in the communication center research of others.
