Our History
Our Accomplishments
Our Speaking Center is one of the top communication centers in the country. We serve as a national leader on many fronts. Over the last 22 years, we have accomplished what no other center has measured by the:
- amount of scholarship we have produced
- number of consecutive years of leadership we have provided to the National Communication Association’s Communication Centers Section (12+ years)
- volume of communication center awards earned (30+ awards)
- repetition of hosting the national communication center conference
- years of service as leaders of Communication Center Journal
- appointment of six former students to academic support center leadership

Our Start
The University Speaking Center opened in 2002 after much research and preparation by Joyce Ferguson, founding coordinator for UNCG’s Speaking Across the Curriculum Faculty Development program, and Amanda Gunn, our founding director. The University Speaking Center was originally part of a Communication Across the Curriculum program which was tied to SACS accreditation efforts. It is also Dr. Gunn, our founding director’s dissertation.
Our First Ten Years
Written by Evan Zakia and distributed at the 12th Annual Excellence at the Center Conference, this is the story of the UNCG Speaking Center: Written in honor of is tenth academic year in operation, 2012-2013. It is also a story in which the author participated, first as an undergraduate consultant from 2006-2008, and then as a graduate assistant from 2009-2012.
